A former basketball-playing, graduate from Wayzata High School and Gustavus Adolphus alum, Nicole didn't always plan on coming into the family business. Now over 15 years later, Nicole says she loves helping run the clothing store and is proud to keep the experience of a specialty store alive and well in this day and age. "It’s so satisfying to make someone’s day by helping them find just the right outfit for a special event – or gift wrapping a package knowing how excited the recipient will be. Plus, I get to work side by side with my dad and siblings…what could be more fun than that!" Nicole has found her niche at the store in the area of marketing & advertising. She does everything in-house from ad design, to promotion planning, to helping with the website.
She had the unique privilege of working with her grandfather (and Foursome founder), Ron Engel, for over 10 years and says he is not only her fashion idol but idol as a business owner and person of the highest character. He was a true gentleman, always dressed up and classic, but not trendy or over-the-top. "I can picture him in later years, always the class act, walking with his cane into the store in a suit coat and fedora. He loved people and built this business on genuine relationships." Nicole says one of her best moments in the business was going to New York in 2013 to receive the prestigious Uptown/Downtown award for retail innovation. The coolest part was that the ceremony took place on what would have been Ron's 87th birthday.
In her own closet, Nicole is a fan of dresses and loves everything from colorful sundresses to plain charcoal or black dresses. "They are so easy – just one thing to pick in the morning and I’m off to get kids on the school bus." Her favorite look for her husband Adam is when he's in his casual outdoor wear from True Grit, Kuhl, Tasc or Tommy Bahama. When not at the store, Nicole can be found horseback riding, walking her dog, and camping with her husband and two daughters. She also enjoys seeing live music from bands like The Hold Steady, Frightened Rabbit, and her husband's band, the Goldblooms.
"While I'm alive, I'll make tiny changes to earth."
